Finding Happiness in Standing Out: How Going Against the Norms Can Bring Joy

Writer's picture: Rachel HuelskRachel Huelsk

Are you a go with the flow person or stand out in the crowd? I’ve always been a stand out in the crowd, or black sheep if you will. So many times I’ve paved my own way, or deviated from what was considered typical. Some situations this caused extra stress and anxiety. But more often than not my decision served me in ways I am thankful for. Paving my own way has served me in a large way. I never had to question what if. The “what if” was always presented to me. Follow the crowd and I knew the outcome. Follow my own way and experience success or failure. The thought of failure wasn’t enough to stop me. I never felt like I was doing it because someone else was. It’s easy to find comfort in numbers. If something fails, you aren’t the only one. By choosing your own path, the thought of failure can be intimidating and even scary. However, when you find success it’s that much more beautiful. Your success is independent from anyone else and can be celebrated that much more.

So how does this apply to my business strategies now? I’ve been doing a ton of business research and still find myself compelled to go against the grain, even in my business model. There is the saying “the riches are in the niches”. And while this may be true, what do you do when you have more than one niche? Right now my head is swarming with ideas, and I see ways to serve in more than one area. According to so many business models you should be crystal clear on your target audience. But I have more than one! And while it may be suggested to separate these out, I’m choosing to combine my content. I may best serve my audience with different platforms but I won’t be serving my audience at all if I don’t just show up. I’m showing up in ways that are manageable to me! I hope you can find some content that serves you. See a post you don’t love? Don’t go too far, my content will cycle through on various topics and hopefully land again on something you love and resonates with you.
